December 9, 2008 Northwest Flight Attendants Reiterate Date of Hire Seniority Integration Northwest flight attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA), reiterated their position on "date of hire" seniority integration after arbitrators announced yesterday the long-awaited decision in the Delta Air Lines pilots' union case. After failing to reach an agreement between pilots at Northwest Airlines and Delta, leaders from each council agreed to let a third party panel determine the process for integrating the two seniority lists.
December 9, 2008 Delta Pilots Seniority Arbitration Shows Importance Of 'Date Of Hire' To Flight Attendants Patricia Friend, AFA-CWA International President, issued the following statement today after an arbitration panel's decision Monday evening on how to integrate pilot seniority lists for a merged Delta and Northwest Airlines. Flight attendants from Delta and Northwest are currently working together on a joint campaign for representation by AFA-CWA.
"AFA-CWA uses one method of guaranteeing seniority for flight attendants, and that is date of hire. The fairest and most equitable way to protect seniority while honoring a flight attendant's length of service is through ‘date of hire' integration. AFA-CWA does not believe in outsourcing such important decisions to third party arbitrators. It is a highly risky, complicated and very time consuming process
December 3, 2008 Lynx Aviation Flight Attendants To Vote On AFA-CWA Representation The National Mediation Board (NMB) announced this week the voting schedule for a representation election for Lynx Aviation flight attendants. Last month, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) submitted signature cards to the NMB from Lynx flight attendants who want AFA-CWA as their collective bargaining representative. Balloting instructions will be sent to Lynx flight attendants on December 15. Voting will take place December 15 through January 12, 2009.
November 24, 2008 Midwest Flight Attendants To Picket On Busiest Travel Day Of The Year On the busiest travel day of the year, Midwest flight attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA), will picket and leaflet at the Milwaukee airport. Upset by the continued outsourcing of jobs, Midwest flight attendants will inform the public that the carrier has been transferring most flights to another airline.
November 24, 2008 Ryan International Flight Attendants To Vote On AFA-CWA Representation After reviewing that the required amount of Ryan International flight attendants are in support of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) becoming their collective bargaining representative, the National Mediation Board (NMB) announced Friday the voting schedule for a representation election. Balloting instructions will be sent to Ryan flight attendants in upcoming weeks and voting will take place from December 11 to January 6, 2009.

October 2, 2008 Federal Agency Refuses To Investigate AFA-CWA Interference Charges The National Mediation Board (NMB) ruled in a 2-1 decision this week that it would ignore the numerous charges of interference by Delta Airlines management, filed by the Association of Flight Attendants – CWA, AFL-CIO with the NMB, that occurred during a recent representational election by the airline’s flight attendants. The ruling was made by the three-member panel of presidential appointees that forms the NMB. One member of the NMB issued a strong dissent saying that an investigation is warranted. The NMB is the federal agency charged with oversight on union representation elections and contract negotiations in the aviation industry under the Railway Labor Act (RLA).

Earlier this year, Delta violated the right for its flight attendants to organize, directly contradicting Article IV.1 (a) of OECD's Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises regarding cooperation with employees and facilitation of collective bargaining.
September 8, 2008 Flight Attendants Demand Congress Hold Hearing On Broken Government Agency - National Mediation Board The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) International President Patricia Friend, along with Communication Workers of America President Larry Cohen, sent a joint letter to Congress today demanding a public hearing be held regarding the conduct of the National Mediation Board (NMB) prior to the finalization of the merger between Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines. In the letter to Chairman Edward Kennedy of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee, and Chairman James Oberstar of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, AFA-CWA asked for public hearings in order to shine a spotlight on the overwhelmingly anti-worker policies of the current NMB.
August 20, 2008 US Airways Executives Receive Millions In Stock As Passengers Are Nickel and Dimed Flight attendants at US Airways, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA), are outraged over the announcement that seven of the airline’s top executives were recently awarded stock appreciation grants totaling millions of dollars. On August 5, 2008, less than one week after US Airways began charging passengers two dollars for non-alcoholic beverages, the company’s Board of Directors Compensation Committee approved over 800,000 shares as part of the airline’s “Equity Incentive Plan.” Chairman and CEO Doug Parker received 275,000 shares.
July 31, 2008 US Airways Aircraft Turn Into Flying Vending Machines As the airline industry continues to be dominated by high fuel prices and passengers face a multitude of fees and extra charges, US Airways management recently made the announcement to charge for non-alcoholic beverages in flight. Beginning Friday, August 1, US Airways will start charging passengers $2 for soft drinks and $1 for coffee and hot tea. Flight attendants at US Airways and America West, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA), are adamantly opposed to this unprecedented decision due to lack of proper planning and poor notification to passengers.

June 6, 2008 AFA-CWA Files Formal Interference Charges Against Delta Air Lines Management The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) filed formal interference charges today with the National Mediation Board (NMB) against Delta Air Lines management alleging illegal conduct during the recent flight attendant representation election. AFA-CWA’s allegations include substantial evidence that Delta flight attendants were denied a free and fair election due to management’s aggressive tactics aimed at defeating union representation.

May 20, 2008 Flight Attendants One Step Closer To FMLA Coverage Flight attendants today are one step closer to qualifying for coverage under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Airline Flight Crew Technical Corrections Act, H.R. 2744, by a wide margin of 402 to 9. For 15 years, flight attendants and other airline employees have had difficulty qualifying for FMLA coverage due to the Act’s language which makes it extremely difficult for employees with unique timekeeping methods to meet the defined minimum number of hours worked.
May 19, 2008 Flight Attendants Not Celebrating US Airways and America West Merger Anniversary On the third anniversary of the US Airways and America West Airlines merger announcement, over 7,000 flight attendants at America West and US Airways, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) have no reason to celebrate. A merged contract between both flight attendant groups has not been reached.

May 15, 2008 Delta Flight Attendant Election Receives Intense Scrutiny In Congressional Merger Hearing In a Congressional hearing yesterday regarding the impact of the proposed merger between Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines, members of the U.S. House of Representative’s Subcommittee on Aviation grilled Delta CEO Richard Anderson on his failure to declare neutrality in Delta flight attendants’ union representation election. Delta flight attendants are in the midst of a vote seeking to become members of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA). The election and the overall effects this merger would have on employees at both carriers were a major focus of the seven-hour hearing, dominating much of the question-and-answers periods.
May 8, 2008 Flight Attendants Testify: Without Unions Delta/Northwest Merger Poses Threat To Middle Class Jobs Yesterday before the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety and Security, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) testified that the potential merger between Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines could have devastating effects that reach far beyond economic concerns. The proposed merger threatens to initiate the unraveling of the entire industry, destroying middle class jobs in the process.

May 6, 2008 United and US Airways Flight Attendant Leaders Comment On Merger Reports In response to recent speculation regarding a merger between US Airways and United Airlines, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) Master Executive Council presidents at America West, US Airways and United, representing over 21,000 flight attendants, issued the following statement regarding the failed actions of the current management at each airline and the dangers of multiplying those failures by forcing them under one roof:
“Labor relations at our carriers is at an all-time low. US Airways CEO Doug Parker has failed for almost three years to negotiate a combined contract with the flight attendants at America West and US Airways. While executives have repeatedly awarded themselves millions in salary and bonuses, America West and US Airways flight attendants have not received raises or improvements in working conditions for nearly five years.
April 30, 2008 UAL Shareholders to Vote on Executive Compensation As an individual shareholder, Greg Davidowitch, President of Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO (AFA-CWA) at United Airlines, submitted a stockholder proposal for a Shareholder Advisory Vote on Executive Compensation (‘Say on Pay’). Once approved, shareholders would achieve an annual advisory, non-binding vote on executive compensation submitted by the United Board of Directors.
April 29, 2008 Delta Flight Attendants Brief Congressional Leaders On Management's Voter Supression Delta Air Lines flight attendants yesterday met with dozens of Congressional offices regarding Delta management’s aggressive voter suppression campaign during the current AFA-CWA representation election. As flight attendants enter their second week of voting, management continues to ramp up their tactics of intimidation and interference, pushing flight attendants not to vote for the union.
April 24, 2008 Delta-Northwest Merger Fails To Win Approval From Key Stakeholders The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA), which represents Northwest flight attendants and is currently on the ballot for a representation election for Delta Air Lines flight attendants, testified before a U.S. House Judiciary subcommittee on the effects the pending merger between Delta and Northwest would have on flight attendants and other employees. Polls for the historic representation election opened April 23 at 12:01 a.m. EDT as the National Mediation Board (NMB) sent instructions to the over 13,500 Delta flight attendants. It is often difficult for flight attendants to qualify for FMLA coverage due to their unusual work schedules and the specific requirements of the law. April 3, 2008 ATA Flight Attendants Union Responds As Airline Shuts Down Abruptly For the second time in one week, a U.S. airline has ceased operations under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Today, ATA Airlines announced that it would discontinue all operations, just hours after filing for bankruptcy. ATA flight attendant union leaders were notified early this morning of the shutdown and immediately put together a detailed plan to assist the over 750 ATA flight attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA).

March 31, 2008 Aloha Flight Attendants Fight Closure Of Passenger Service Aloha Airlines flight attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) filed court papers today opposing the airline’s bankruptcy court motion to approve the shutdown. AFA-CWA’s filing supports a similar motion filed by Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle. Aloha management announced on March 30 that the airline would discontinue its passenger service effective later today.

March 19, 2008 Delta Flight Attendants to Participate in Historic Union Election Flight attendants at Delta Air Lines received news from the National Mediation Board (NMB) yesterday that they will soon have the opportunity to vote on becoming members of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA). In a March 18 letter, the NMB authorized a representation election for Delta flight attendants. AFA-CWA anticipates that the dates for the voting schedule will be announced within the next week.
