AFA-CWA Testifies On Need For Bankruptcy Reform At Congressional Hearing
Washington, DC - The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) today testified before the House Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law on the need for reform to the current corporate bankruptcy process that often rewards executives at the expense of workers. AFA-CWA Northwest Airlines President Janette Rook implored the committee to consider the importance of bankruptcy reform and support a bill currently before Congress, H.R. 4677, that would help to protect employees and retirees in the bankruptcy process.
"Many of our flight attendants, as well as other airline workers, have had their lives destroyed by these bankruptcies, and by management's use of the law to force devastating cuts on employees," said Rook. "We must end this practice and restore fairness and trust, as well as provide the framework for an orderly restructuring and reorganization when a company, and most importantly its employees, face bankruptcy." "Frontier flight attendants look forward to negotiating a contract that will protect our interests and address our issues," said Erika Schweitzer, appointed transitional AFA-CWA Frontier President. Historic Policy Change Brings Democracy to Union Elections
National Mediation Board to End Archaic Voting Procedures
Washington, DC - The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) International President Patricia Friend issued the following statement today after the National Meditation Board (NMB) announced new voting procedures. Under the new guidelines, the majority of workers who actually vote in union elections will decide the election and the NMB will stop assigning "no" votes to workers who do not participate in the election.
"Today, we gladly usher in a new era of democracy. For far too long, flight attendants and other aviation and railway employees have faced significant obstacles in their quest for collective bargaining rights. Outdated and unreliable voting procedures have fostered a unique culture of voter suppression as companies understand that impeding union organizing merely requires preventing employees from voting. Employers and their outside union busting companies engaged in the most undemocratic of practices by openly encouraging workers to destroy ballots and to not vote. Those days are now over.
"Throughout this country, from school boards to the United States Congress, a majority of those casting ballots determine election outcomes. And for the first time in recent history, elections conducted by the NMB will be held to the standards and principles that our country was founded upon. Carry-On Baggage Endangers Crew and Passengers, Flight Attendants Say
AFA-CWA Launches Public Campaign to End Carry-On Crunch
Washington, DC, March 15, 2010 - The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) today released the results of a recent membership survey in which one out of two flight attendants witnessed carry-on items falling from overhead bins in the previous 60 days. The survey validated anecdotal reports that carry-on baggage is out of control, mostly due to recent fees to check luggage.
"We now have compelling evidence that flight attendants and passengers are being injured by excess amounts of oversized carry-on items," said Patricia Friend, AFA-CWA International President. "AFA-CWA has been urging Congress, government agencies, and carriers to establish reasonable carry-on limitations that will improve the overall safety, health and security of crew and passengers inside the aircraft cabin. These limits will reduce injuries and distractions caused by carry-ons and allow flight attendants to devote more attention to the critical task of ensuring the safest and most secure flight possible."
